Veneering

A veneer is a thin layer of material attached in front of another object to give it a new “look”. In dentistry, veneers are used to improve the appearance of discoloured , malformed or unattractive teeth.Dental veneers are made with mainly two materials, ceramic and composite resin. Both can last long provided the use is reasonable.Ceramic has the advantage that it is stain free, wear resistant and retains the gloss for its life.Single teeth or multiple teeth can be veneered.

How are gaps between teeth closed? (more details / FAQ)

Basically two techniques are used, (depending on factors like the amount of gap, position of lower teeth, position of lips and gums etc.)
First technique is to add teeth colored materials to teeth and to increase the width.(where this suits) Composite resin is commonly used for this purpose, ceramic veneers too come in handy, depending on the situation. Advantages include quick results (within an hour) ease of alterations and relatively lower cost.
Second technique is to bring the teeth together with braces. Advantage s include lack of artificial stuff on teeth and many others. Disadvantage is that this work takes time

Can the color of dark gums be changed?
      Easily, in one visit, painlessly.
Gums are made numb and the outer dark layer is removed
Normally the dark color does not return for years, and the procedure can be repeated if necessary

What is a “cap” or “crown”? (case photos)

Cap and crown are one and the same, it is a cover made to look just like a tooth, fixed onto the required tooth. Of course, the original tooth will have to be reduced in size to fit the crown. (in many instances, broken down teeth are built up first to receive the crown ! ) Crowns are done in situations where it will protect the underlying tooth from breaking down further, or for other reasons.Ceramic is the preferred medium for crowns these days. (Acrylic may be cheaper, but can wear off, stain and may not be acceptable aesthetically.Crowns can make ugly teeth beautiful and can last for a long long time.It is possible to make life like , beautiful crowns today with the latest ceramic materials.Crowns can be made to match the neighboring teeth too.

Bridges

Bridges are fixed replacements of lost teeth , where the lost tooth is replaced by attaching it to the crowns fixed on to the neighboring teeth. One tooth or multiple teeth can be replaced in this manner Here again, ceramic is the preferred medium. (case photos) Predictable results have made crowns and bridges an integral part of cosmetic dentistry today.

Implants

What  are  dental  implants and what are they used for ?
Dental implants are substitutes for the lost natural "roots" of teeth.
They  are  used  for  replacing  missing  teeth  in a fixed  manner, directly  on  to  the  bone. The  implant is  fixed  into  the  bone,  instead  of  the  lost  root  and  the  false tooth, teeth or denture  is fixed  to  the   implant.

One  tooth, a  few  teeth  or  all the  teeth  can  be  replaced  using  this  method. Implants  can  be  used  to  support  and  stabilize  the  conventional  ‘complete  dentures’  too, to  get  rid  of  their  discomfort, pain  or  mobility. What  are  Dental  Implants  made  of?
Implants  are  made  of Titanium, one  of  the  most body -friendly  materials  known  today.
Will not  our  body  treat  titanium  as  a  ‘foreign  body’  and  reject  the  implant?
No, on  the  contrary, our  bone  seems  to ‘like titanium  and  seems  to  accept  it   without  any  foreign  body  reaction.

How  does  the  implant  stay  in the  bone?
Living   bone ‘grows  on  to’  the  titanium  implant, keeping  it  firmly  in  position. (osseointegration) Once  thus  fixed,  it  can  take  the  load  of  chewing .

What  exactly  is  the  implant  treatment  procedure?
A  suitable  implant  for  the  location  is  chosen  and  is placed  into  the  bone.  The  crown  of  the  tooth will be fixed on  to  the  implant  within  a  few  days  or  at  a  later  date  depending  on  the  type  of  implant  and  the  location.

Does  it  hurt  when  the  implants are  placed?
No, it does not  hurt  at  all. Implantation  is a  painless  procedure.

How  long can  the  implant  last  in  the  mouth?
It  depends  on the  use  and  the  care  taken. A  well  maintained  implant  can  be  in  use  for many  long  years.

What  is  the  current  success  rate  of  Dental  implants?
The  current  success  rate  of  dental implants is over  95%.

Do   implants  need  any  special  care?
Just  like  our  natural  teeth,  implants  need  to  be  maintained   in  a  clean  manner  in order  for  them  to  stay  healthy.

Teeth Whitening

If  the  overall  colour  of  teeth  is  not  satisfactory  teeth  can  be  whitened  using  this  procedure.Teeth  do  not  have  to  be  reduced  or disturbed  for  whitening.

For the home bleaching procedure, a   soft  plastic  tray  with  the  whitening   gel  is  worn  at  night,  while  going  to  bed. The  whitening  agent  acts  overnight  and  the  tray  can  be  removed  in  the  morning. This  procedure  is   repeated  for ten  to  twelve  days by which  time the  teeth  would  have  gained  colour  substantially.

The  whitening  agent  used  are safe and the  effect  of whitening   can last  for  many  years.

Can the color of dark gums be changed ?
     Easily, in one visit, painlessly.
Gums are made numb and the outer dark layer is removed Normally the dark color does not return for years, and the procedure can be repeated if necessary.

Why replace missing teeth at all?

Missing teeth must be replaced in most cases for these  reasons

1.The neighbouring teeth will shift, causing spaces and food impaction between  them.

   2. The opposing tooth will supra erupt, causing  uneven wear of the
teeth , food impaction and gum problems.

   3. A missing tooth , in the visible area can be aesthetically unacceptable
